It’s been a rough back half of September but we’re turning our hopeful eyes to October. That starts with honoring Ruth Bader Ginsburg by letting her memory be a revolution – checking our voter registration status, revisiting her comments on the #metoo movement, and learning about her legacy as the co-founder of the Women’s Rights Project at the ACLU.
October is bursting at the seams with cool stuff – to start, it’s both LGBT History Month and Let’s Talk Month. Let’s Talk Month is coordinated by Advocates for Youth and is “a campaign to encourage open and honest communication about sexual health and sexuality.” On top of that, National Coming Out Day is October 11th and October 26th is Intersex Awareness Day – keep an eye out for more on our socials once we get to the big days. And last but certainly not least, UN|HUSHED’s Birthday Blowout is October 24th! Read on for more details.
Finally, while not necessarily surprising, the lack of indictments for the killing of Breonna Taylor is heartbreaking. As Roxane Gay said following the ruling, “It’s a special kind of cruelty that more protestors in Louisville tonight will be charged than men who murdered Breonna Taylor.” Find links to donate to bail funds and to Breonna Taylor’s family as well as other ways to get involved here.
A quick recap of September.
This fall has been tricky for students and parents alike and we want to give everyone a chance to adapt to online learning, back in person learning, or some combination thereof. That meant making the decision to shift our community sex ed programing to January. But when it reappears it will still be all online, all synchronous (no homework), all weekends (never conflicting with the school day), and all life saving info! There will be new parent orientation dates as well but don’t worry – if you attended in August then you’re grandfathered (or grandmothered or grandparented!) in. Watch this space for more details as we get closer to registration time for this innovative, trauma informed, and fun virtual sex ed.
For spooky October it’s a real treat to highlight our copy editor Killian! An Austin transplant turned local, Killian has worked as an editor in various capacities for over a decade and is bringing her expertise to our curricula and website. She took a few minutes away from her very cute dog and from dotting our i’s and crossing our t’s to answer a few questions.
And now on to Octopus-ber!
UN|HUSHED is a Scorpio and our birthday is almost upon us! We’ll be seizing the day to connect with our community, have a blast, and raise money to fund the inaugural year of a Youth Advisory Council as well as other essential UN|HUSHED functions.
When: October 24th, 2020
What: Read aloud for kiddos, trivia for adults, and much more!
How much: Come for free, donate as you’re able!
Join us in the morning with kiddos for story time – age appropriate, sexual health themed kids books read aloud by our very own Jessica Smarr. In the afternoon we’ll be hosting an all ages presentation on the Youth Advisory Council featuring youth leaders and UN|HUSHED organizers. In the evening we’ll turn things over to the adults for sexual health trivia with themed cocktails (the recipes come from us, the bartender is you!), raffles for donors, and prizes for our winning trivia teams.
We’ll be sending a separate update with itineraries and all the other pertinent details. Watch this space and use the time to come up with some punny team names that will really knock our socks off!
Our Teaching Sex Education Online: Take Two web series keeps on keepin on! In September we talked about what trauma informed processes look like in online sex ed, with a focus on the cameras-on versus cameras-off debate. We already had our October session last Thursday, where a guest speaker talked about how to handle disclosure of abuse in digital spaces. If you missed it, never fear, there’s still time to register for the ongoing monthly series and all sessions are recorded and posted so new participants can review anything they missed.
Did you know we did a Spanish language version of Teaching Sex Ed Online over the summer? The training may be over but materials and recordings of every session are still online! Register here to access them or pass the link along to a Spanish speaking friend.
Do you buy a ton of stuff from Amazon? Do you buy stuff on your phone and then think, “Aww, I should have put that in my cart and then bought it on my computer so I could have gone to smile and supported my favorite sex ed org.” No, just us? Well, now you can buy stuff using Amazon smile right from your phone or tablet.
Download or update to the latest version of the AmazonShopping app on your phone. You can find it in the App Store for iOS or Google Play for Android. Open the app and find ‘Settings’ in the main menu (☰). Tap on ‘AmazonSmile’ and follow the on-screen instructions to turn on AmazonSmile on your phone. Don’t forget to set UN|HUSHED as your charity of choice!
The UN|HUSHED Board of Directors is currently seeking qualified candidates with law, finance, administrative, event planning, and grant-writing experience. We are an equal opportunity organization and dedicated to being 100% remote through 2020.
Thanks for following along! We’ll be back in touch next month to say hi and share more exciting news. You can keep your fingers on the pulse of UN|HUSHED and find a bunch of fun and informative stuff around the work we do by following us on social media and checking back here on the blog. If you haven’t already seen it, check out this post from Executive Director Dr. Karen Rayne on blended learning and the opportunities, as well as challenges, it presents.
We’d also love to hear from you. Get in touch with us via our facebook, instagram, twitter, linkedin, or contact us directly through the website.
